WATERING GRASS
Water is an essential part of a best-looking and healthy lawn. Therefore, it is vital to make sure that grass landscapes are adequately watered at right time. Listed below are the most asked questions related to watering grass.

When to water and how much to water?
Generally it has been considered that grass needs less water in winter than summer, but it not the case. Overall grass needs at least 1 or 1 ½ inch of water per week, either its winter or summer. The difference is that during extreme heat the lawn should be watered more as the water gets evaporated due to heat stress. To maintain the water level a rain gauge can be purchased. If an inch of water is shown in it per week, then that’s perfect.
The information given above is a guideline as different soil types need different amounts of water. Soil is composed of various types, usually a combination of clay and sand called as loam. The water that is required by the soil is dependent on this factor. The loam that is more on clayish side holds more moisture than the sandy loam. Also, water penetrates slowly in clay as compared to sand. So these points should be considered when watering grass.
In case of extreme temperatures such as ’90ºs or over 100º then it is best to raise mowing height a little, and the grass should be watered more (mainly if its fescue) because, during the heated weather, water also acts as a coolant. So daily watering in the hot weather should be an addition to the schedule.

How long should a lawn be watered to get 1 or 1 ½ inch?
The answer to how long to water grass depends upon the sprinkler and water pressure. But it can be measured by putting an inch container (a container marked up to 1 ½ inch can also be taken) in the lawn where sprinkler throws water. Container should be left to fill after turning own the sprinkler. The time the sprinkler takes to fill the 1 ½ inch container is the required time. For example, 30 minutes is taken by sprinkler to fill the container; then, the sprinkler should be run 3 times a week for 30 minutes.

How many times should grass be watered per week?
It is right to water deeply 2-3 times per week, rather than daily as watering daily gives the grass a shallow root system. The shallow root systems dry out fast, and turf gets weaken. Watering deeply 3 times per week will provide grass a deep root system and makes it drought-resistant.

At which time of the day, grass should be watered?

Watering early in the morning is the best time to water grass as it will ensure that the grass in the lawn dries completely before night because a wet lawn on a regular basis at night can lead to fungus problems.
Another factor is evaporation. If the grass is watered early in the morning, then there will be less evaporation, which means that grass will require less water, and ultimately, the time and money on the water bill can be saved which makes watering early in the morning a win-win situation.
